SUZY: How’s the biography?

JEFF: Straightforward. Factual. Informative.

SUZY: I prefer Greek mythology. Surprising. Fun.

JEFF: Fiction

SUZY: Fiction isn’t necessarily a bad thing…

JEFF: But it can be…

SUZY: Like…?

JEFF: I’m just saying I prefer getting my facts straight when it comes to certain things — like biographies... and health insurance

SUZY: … Like what we were talking about during breakfast this morning... some of the chatter about our new Aetna Medicare Advantage plan has my eyebrow raised, and you know how I worry…

JEFF: Oh, do I ever.

SUZY: And sometimes things do sound too good to be true.

JEFF: What have you heard?

SUZY: That it isn’t as good as some other plans, like individual Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement.

JEFF: Incorrect.

SUZY: You pay more but get less coverage.

JEFF: Myth.  In fact, group plans aren’t available on the market to just anyone. Aetna works to customize a retiree plan just for us.

SUZY: Oh, really?

JEFF: Yep, that means they can build in additional services just for us too. Those benefits we’ve heard about ‒ like home health visits, community referral services and support programs for chronic health conditions –

SUZY: Those would all be nice…

JEFF: Those are all included with our coverage. Because we’re in a plan with all the other retirees we used to work with, we have our former employer looking out for us. For our neighbors, it might be a union or a trust—but that means we’re more likely to see stronger coverage and lower costs. So that’s another fact for you.

SUZY: Unbelievable.

JEFF: Well, believe it! Also, fact, we can have a lower cost plan without sacrificing quality.

SUZY: How are you so informed?

JEFF: I called Aetna Member Services the other day.

SUZY: Well aren’t you smart.

SUZY: Yunno, George and Anita have been saying how much they love the new plan and how good the service is. I guess what they said was true after all.

JEFF: And the truth prevails!

SUZY: Well, I’m glad myths can stay where they belong–

SUZY: –right here.

JEFF: Enjoy your fictitious fantasyland.

SUZY: Enjoy your factual snoozefest.

Group Medicare Advantage Access to Care

CARLY: What do you think you’re gonna get?

SUZY: My usual, she knows what I like. One scoop of vanilla please.

CARLY: Ma! Why are you limiting yourself when there are so many choices?

SUZY: I’m just being practical in my retirement years.

CARLY: Hmm.. are you still stressing about not having choices with your new Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plan?

SUZY (sighs): Yesss… I can’t stop worrying. What if there are hardly any doctors to choose from? What if I have to stop seeing Doctor Betty? What if I have to drive two hours, with your father, to the nearest in-network doctor?

CARLY: What if…

CARLY (cont): … we call Aetna Member Services and find out?

SUZY (into phone): Yes, I have questions about my Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plan. Can I still see my doctor, Betty Bartock?

Suzy nods her head and places her hand over the microphone.

SUZY (to Carly): With the type of PPO plan I have, I can see any doctor, whether they are in  network or not.  Fantastic!

She’s confirming now that Dr. Betty is eligible to receive Medicare payment and will bill and accept payment from Aetna.

CARLY: Yay!

SUZY (into phone): Oh. That’s great!

SUZY (to Carly): There are lots of doctors to choose from, too.

SUZY (into phone):}Fantastic! Thanks for your help!

SUZY: I can stay with Doctor Betty!

CARLY: Yay!

SUZY: I’ve got options.

CARLY: You’ve got options!

SUZY I’ve got options!

SUZY: Oh maple walnut buttercream…

CARLY: Chocolate strawberry delight…

SUZY: Pickled pistachios with quinoa sprinkles…

SUZY: Well, maybe not that one…

CARLY: Yeah I mean there’s also rum raisin

With the Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plan, you have the freedom to see any licensed doctor or hospital, as long as the provider is eligible to receive Medicare payment, agrees to treat you and will bill and accept payment from Aetna. Group Medicare Advantage Prior Authorization facts

Group Medicare Advantage Prior Authorization facts

SUZY: What’s this?

CARLY: The kids made you a “heartfelt” gift bag for your upcoming heart surgery.

SUZY: Awwww…my

SUZY: It’s like they know their Mimi is in worry-mode.

CARLY: Oh, Ma. How can I help?

SUZY: I feel like I’m forgetting to do something before my surgery…

SUZY: Ollie’s teddy bear?!

CARLY: On loan.

SUZY (with a smile): Of course.

CARLY: You gave Aetna permission to talk to me, right? As a caregiver?

SUZY: Yes.

CARLY: Let me call to see if there’s anything we need to do while you work on opening your next gift.

MEMBER SERVICES REP: Aetna Member Services, how may I help?

CARLY: My mother has an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan with her former employer, and I wanted to see if there’s anything we need to do or get, like an approval, before her heart surgery.

SUZY (to herself): Gosh they sure used a lot of tape.

MEMBER SERVICES REP: No problem. What’s her name?

CARLY (talking to Rep): Her name is Suzy Ziegler and I’m her daughter, Carly Rivera.

MEMBER SERVICES REP (types at his computer): Thanks Carly.  I see your mom has given us permission to share this information with you, so let me see what the status is.

CARLY (talking to Rep): Thanks! She’s been worried about prior authorizations, and well, worrying about everything.

MEMBER SERVICES REP: Of course, and you can tell her there’s no need to worry. Prior authorizations are only required for few services. Aetna Medicare Advantage plans work with providers behind the scenes to get the necessary prior authorizations for services like skilled nursing care and surgeries.

MEMBER SERVICES REP: Ah here we go. We received her authorization from Dr. Betty, and I see that it's been reviewed and approved! She’ll be getting a letter in the mail soon.

CARLY (to Rep): She’s good to go?

MEMBER SERVICES REP: She’s good to go!

CARLY (to Suzy): You’re good to go!

CARLY (to Rep): Thank you!

CARLY: Your doctor worked with the Aetna care team to get your prior authorization. You don’t need to do a thing.

SUZY: Nothing?

CARLY: Except finishing opening your gift!

SUZY: I’m getting there! Seems like you had the easier assignment here!

CARLY: Leah made that for you…

SUZY: Oh, my heart…

Group Medicare Advantage Transition of Care

SUZY: New menu…

JEAN: New name…

SUZY: What if they don’t have our favorite frittatas anymore?

JEAN: Or our favorite breakfast smoothies?

SUZY: Or Shirlene! What if she isn’t working here anymore? Ugh. I hate change.

JEAN: Yunno, speaking of change, I finally made the change over to the Aetna Medicare Advantage plan.

SUZY: Was it horrible? Did you have to switch doctors? Am I going to lose my mind when I switch over?

JEAN: Actually… it wasn’t bad at all. Kinda good. Kinda easy. I was worried I wasn’t going to be able to continue with my treatment…

SUZY: Your treatment, right…

JEAN: So, I called and was connected to a nurse case manager. And she explained that when you have a planned surgery or an ongoing treatment plan, like I do, Aetna doesn’t dictate which treatments my doctor recommends. They helped make the transition totally seamless. My same doctors are able to continue my course of treatment which is so important since they know me, and the ins and outs of my situation.

SUZY: Really?

JEAN: Really.

SHIRLENE: My favorite regulars!

JEAN: Shirlene! Our favorite waitress!

SHIRLENE: Brought you over your usuals.

JEAN & SUZY: Bananas for you breakfast smoothies!

SUZY: To change…

JEAN: that sorta stays the same…

SUZY: I’ll drink to that!

If you a have planned surgery, hospitalization, testing or ongoing treatment, let us know. We’ll connect you with one of our nurse case managers to ensure a smooth transition to your new plan.
